A Greek flag has been raised at the site where two firefighters were killed while battling a wildfire in the village of Krya Vrysi, in the regional unit of Rethymno on the island of Crete.
In an emotional tribute, the families of 25-year-old Pantelis Diamantakis and 58-year-old Manolis Stratidakis placed the national flag at the location where the fire engine carrying the two men became trapped by the flames. They also left photographs of their loved ones as a simple but moving memorial.
The site has since become a place of remembrance, honoring the sacrifice of firefighters who risk their lives every day to protect people, property, and the natural environment.
The deaths of the two firefighters underscore the dangerous conditions faced by firefighting crews as they battle increasingly severe wildfires.
Solidarity Campaign Launched for Fire Victims
Meanwhile, the mayor of Apokoronas, Charalambos Koukianakis, has called for public support for residents affected by the wildfires in the municipalities of Agios Vasileios and Amari.
“When Crete stands united, no one is left alone,” the mayor said, noting that the fires destroyed homes and livelihoods while also claiming the lives of the two firefighters who died in the line of duty protecting local communities and the environment.
As part of the 4th Festival of Cretans Living Abroad, scheduled for Monday, August 3, at 8 p.m. in Georgioupoli, Apokoronas Municipality, together with Cretan associations and the Harilaos Traditional Music Association, will organize a donation drive for wildfire victims.
Residents are encouraged to donate bottled water, milk, baby food and infant supplies, non-perishable food, personal hygiene and cleaning products, baby and adult diapers, as well as animal feed for pets and livestock.
“It is not the size of the donation that matters, but that no one is absent from this great chain of solidarity,” Koukianakis said, urging the public to turn their attendance at the event into a meaningful act of support for those affected by the fires.
