Authorities in central Greece have issued a public health alert after laboratory tests found unsafe levels of chemical contaminants in the water supply of two communities in the municipality of Almyros.
According to the local water authority, tap water in the villages of Perdika and Neraida has been deemed unsuitable for human consumption following recent water quality analyses.
Tests carried out by regional public health authorities detected elevated nitrate levels in Neraida, while samples from Perdika showed excessive concentrations of nitrates, bromates and total trihalomethanes. The findings were also confirmed through independent testing commissioned by the local water utility.
Temporary Ban on Drinking Water Use
Officials said previous measurements in recent months had remained within legal safety limits, but the latest inspections revealed significant exceedances in critical quality indicators, prompting emergency preventive measures.
Residents have been instructed not to use tap water for drinking, cooking, food preparation, washing food or making ice until further notice.
Authorities clarified that the water may still be used for cleaning and other household purposes.
Emergency Measures Underway
The local water utility has already launched a series of interventions aimed at restoring water quality, including the distribution of bottled water to residents, cleaning and disinfecting storage tanks and the water network, and continuous sampling and monitoring.
Officials said all necessary corrective measures are being implemented to fully restore the safety of the drinking water supply.
