An act of vandalism has damaged the memorial to the 200 resistance fighters executed on May 1, 1944, in the Athens suburb of Kaisariani, shortly after eight historic photographs from the mass execution resurfaced publicly.

The attack targeted the Memorial of the 200, located at the Sacrificial Altar of Freedom inside the Kaisariani Shooting Range. Broken marble plaques and visible damage marked the scene. Local authorities placed protective tape around the affected areas to block access.

According to local officials, the vandals specifically damaged a marble plaque describing the timeline of the fighters’ sacrifice, causing significant material damage. The incident occurred immediately after the release of rare visual material highlighting the stance of the condemned men before the firing squad.

The Municipality of Kaisariani strongly condemned the vandalism, saying that “historical memory does not fade no matter how much it troubles some.” The municipality said it will lead efforts to highlight and upgrade the historic site.

Officials also made clear that the response to the damage will focus on reinforcing the memorial. The municipality announced it will proceed with restoration work and stressed its determination to fully protect the site, despite what it described as efforts by some to undermine historical remembrance.
