A car reportedly torched on Monday at the Athens University’s Zografou district campus belongs to Prof. Dimitris Karonis, a lecturer at the National Technical University of Athens and expert witness in the Tempi rail collision.
After extinguishing the blaze, Fire Brigade investigators referred to traces of arson, with initial assessments pointing to the use of a flammable liquid.
Authorities were immediately notified of the incident, while the preliminary investigation has been undertaken by an anti-terrorism unit.
In his report regarding the Tempi collision and subsequent blast, Prof. Karonis had attributed the fireball created after the collision to leaked silicone oils from the engines of the two trains, basing his conclusion on analyses conducted by the state’s primary chemical lab.
