Authorities in central Greece have ordered the temporary closure of the Violanta food production plant after the fatal explosion that claimed the lives of five female workers.
The decision was issued by the regional governor of Thessaly and formally posted online, suspending operations at the factory until further notice.
Temporary Closure of Violanta Factory
The facility manufactures biscuits, rusks and other confectionery products. It is located about 4 miles outside the city of Trikala, along the Trikala–Karditsa national road, in the region of Thessaly.
The order halts production at the industrial site as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the Jan. 26 explosion, one of the deadliest industrial accidents in the area in recent years.
Owner Remains in Pretrial Detention
The factory’s owner remains in Trikala Prison after an investigating magistrate and prosecutor agreed to place him in pretrial detention in connection with the explosion.
He faces a serious criminal charge related to possible intent in the case. His legal team has said it intends to challenge the detention order.
