Μake us preferred on Google There has been a new legal development in the case of the deadly explosion at “Violanta,” as relatives of the five workers who lost their lives have filed an appeal against the decision to conditionally release the company’s owner, Kostas Tziortziotis.
The request was submitted to the Larissa Prosecutor’s Office by Christos Patounas, the lawyer representing the victims’ families. The appeal asks for the judicial council’s decision, which had also been challenged by the responsible prosecutor, to be reexamined, and for the businessman to remain in custody.
The victims’ relatives have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the decision, arguing that the reasons that originally led to his pretrial detention have not disappeared. According to them, the case file contains evidence which, in their view, shows that safety issues at the facility were known about without the necessary measures being taken.
The judicial council’s decision was based on the assessment that Kostas Tziortziotis is no longer considered a flight risk, nor is there believed to be a risk that he would commit a similar offense. Restrictive conditions were imposed on his release, including a ban on leaving the country and a requirement to report to a police station once a month.
The owner of “Violanta” had been held in pretrial detention since February 2026 and remained in custody for around six and a half months, until his release on Tuesday.
Kostas Tziortziotis faces charges of causing an explosion with possible intent, multiple counts of manslaughter by negligence for the deaths of the five workers, and multiple counts of causing bodily harm. The families’ appeal is now expected to be reviewed by the competent judicial authorities.
