Sunbathers and swimmers arriving for an early start at a beach in central Greece on Tuesday were met with an unusual sight: a wild boar enjoying what appeared to be a morning swim.
At first, people in the water noticed a dark shape moving swiftly across the calm, blue sea. As it drew closer, surprise quickly turned into amusement when it became clear that the unexpected swimmer was not a dog, dolphin or seal—but a wild boar.
The animal was seen confidently making its way through the water, seemingly unbothered by the curious glances from the shore.
While the encounter may have caught beachgoers off guard, wildlife experts note that wild boars are excellent swimmers. The animals are capable of covering considerable distances in the water and have been recorded travelling between coastlines thanks to their endurance and strong swimming ability.
Those same skills are believed to have helped the species expand its range to nearby islands and coastal areas, where wild boar populations are now well established.
