Μake us preferred on Google Four police officers are being referred to trial on felony charges over the killing of Kyriaki Griva, who was fatally attacked by her former partner outside a police station in Athens on April 1, 2024. She had gone to the station because she feared her ex-partner, who was outside her home, and asked police to escort her home. She was instead directed to call the emergency line. While she was speaking to the dispatcher outside the station, her former partner approached and fatally stabbed her.
The officers, who served at the Agioi Anargyroi Police Station, are accused of criminally negligent omissions that left Griva without assistance despite their legal duty to protect her.

According to the judicial council’s ruling, the officers “intentionally, through omissions, exposed another person to danger and left her helpless,” despite having a specific legal obligation to act to prevent the outcome. Their actions or omissions, the ruling states, resulted in the victim’s death.
Four officers accused of failing to act
The officers referred to trial are the officer on duty, the supervising officer, the police guard at the station and the emergency call operator at the police dispatch center.
The judicial ruling outlines separate allegations against each officer.
The police guard is accused of not being sufficiently alert and failing to notice Griva’s former partner, who was about 30 meters from the station’s guard post.

The supervising officer is accused of failing to assist Griva after she reported that her former partner was outside her home and requested a police escort because she was afraid.
The officer on duty is accused of failing to contact the emergency dispatch center so authorities could locate the attacker. She is also accused of failing to arrange for an available patrol car to take Griva home.
The emergency call operator is accused of failing to properly assess the seriousness of the 28-year-old woman’s report and failing to classify the case as a “high-priority” call. According to the ruling, this would have initiated efforts to locate the attacker and safely transport Griva to her home.

Restrictions remain in place
The same judicial ruling maintains the restrictive measures that had previously been imposed on the four defendants following their statements to authorities.
The case concerns the actions of the four officers in the period immediately preceding Griva’s killing by her former partner.
