A large wildfire was burning through a rural and forested area in northeastern Greece’s Rhodope region on Tuesday, prompting a major firefighting response, authorities said.
The blaze broke out near the settlement of Palaia Krovyli in the municipality of Maroneia-Sapes, triggering the immediate deployment of ground and aerial firefighting resources.
A total of 42 firefighters were battling the fire, supported by two specialized wildfire response teams from the 7th Forest Fire Operations Unit and 10 fire engines. Five firefighting aircraft were conducting water drops from the air.
Water tankers and heavy machinery provided by local authorities were also assisting efforts to contain the blaze.
No immediate reports of injuries or damage were available.
