A 30-year-old woman was arrested in Kyparissia on Friday night (24/07). She is believed to be a member of a criminal ring that defrauded people by posing as an accountant offering to arrange financial benefits.
Along with her accomplices, she called a 73-year-old resident of Kyparissia, pretending to be an accountant. Claiming the elderly woman was entitled to a financial benefit, she asked her to gather cash and jewelry, supposedly so they could be photographed as part of the process, according to ERT.
The 73-year-old had 6,000 euros and jewelry worth around 8,000 euros on hand. However, she grew suspicious that it was a scam attempt and told a relative, who immediately alerted police.
Arrested While Going To Collect The Money
A coordinated police operation followed, and when the 30-year-old went to the elderly woman’s home to pick up the cash and jewelry, she was arrested on the spot.
A preliminary investigation by the Kalamata Sub-Directorate for Crime Suppression and Investigation, working with the Trifylia Police Department, found that the same woman, along with her accomplices, had defrauded another victim just hours earlier in the village of Chavari, Ilia, taking 7,000 euros using the exact same method.
Four More People Named In The Case File
The case file includes four more people, one of whom has been partially identified. Police seized a mobile phone from the 30-year-old, which is believed to have been used to contact potential victims and carry out the scams.
According to Greek Police, members of the criminal ring used a large number of phones and different phone numbers to make it harder for authorities to trace and investigate their illegal activity.
The investigation continues, aimed at fully identifying the woman’s accomplices and determining whether they may be linked to similar fraud cases elsewhere in the country.
