Police from the Pineios Police Department are continuing to collect information and testimonies related to the incident. Once the investigation is completed, the file will be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office in Amaliada for further legal action.

Authorities identified the woman over the weekend after reviewing security camera footage and statements from people who witnessed or heard about the incident.

Animal welfare groups react

The case has sparked reactions from local animal welfare activists, with the president of the local animal protection group, Aliki Kolovou, describing the incident as “unthinkable” and warning that cases of animal abuse are not isolated.

She said that similar problems involving abandoned stray animals are frequently reported in the area and welcomed the quick response by authorities and members of the community.

“Violence must be addressed immediately,” she said, adding that the person responsible for the act would face the consequences of their actions.

Calls for action on stray animals

Kolovou also highlighted the need for a broader response to the issue of stray animals in the municipality, noting that several animals in the area remain at risk.

According to the animal welfare group, efforts are underway with the municipality and volunteers to provide care, carry out sterilizations and find homes for stray dogs.

Several dogs have already been rescued and are expected to receive veterinary care and temporary shelter while waiting for adoption. Among them is a dog known as “ERToula,” named after the Greek public broadcaster ERT.
