Greek Police have banned large public outdoor gatherings and motorized marches in central Athens during the 2026 EuroLeague Final Four this coming weekend, citing heightened security concerns linked to the major basketball event.

The restrictions will remain in force from 6 a.m. on May 21 until 6 a.m. on May 25 in parts of the city center and surrounding the venue in the north Athens district of Marousi, as well as nearby high-profile areas associated with the tournament.

Police said the decision was based on a “specific, concrete and sufficiently documented risk assessment,” in line with legislation governing public assemblies.

Officials expect a significant influx of fans, team delegations, VIPs and other visitors in central Athens during the Final Four, particularly in the restricted area.

Authorities also said any gatherings could severely disrupt traffic and daily life in the capital by obstructing access to businesses, public services, residences and hotels during one of the city’s busiest sporting weekends.

European media have reported heightened security preparations across Athens ahead of the EuroLeague Final Four, with Greek authorities deploying thousands of police officers and increasing surveillance measures around hotels, fan zones and transport hubs amid concerns over rival supporter violence and crowd management linked to high-profile continental basketball events.

Recent European sporting tournaments, including football and basketball finals in cities such as Berlin, Paris and Istanbul, have prompted similarly extensive policing operations and temporary restrictions on demonstrations and public movement.
