The Panathenaic Stadium, the marble arena that hosted the first modern Olympic Games, is entering a new era. Line marking has been completed on its new, high-specification track surface, paving the way for the venue to host Diamond League–level meets and events.
The upgrade of the historic stadium is being carried out by the Hellenic Olympic Committee, with financial support from Evangelos Marinakis’ Capital Maritime & Trading Corp.
The work extends beyond the field of play. Alongside the new track, crews are cleaning the stadium’s marble, for the first time in 120 years, and the next phase calls for new LED lighting.
The system will be more environmentally friendly and offer improved lighting capabilities, as the step-by-step overhaul of the Panathenaic Stadium’s facilities, moves toward completion. The stadium also known as the Kallimarmaro, is an all-marble stadium in Athens.
