Μake us preferred on Google For the first time in 120 years, a coordinated operation to clean the marble surfaces of Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium has begun.
The initiative is being carried out by the Hellenic Olympic Committee with the support of Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., the shipping company of Evangelos Marinakis.

Specialized crews are carrying out the work, which aims to restore the natural appearance of the stadium’s Pentelic marble while highlighting the architectural and historical significance of the iconic monument.
The Panathenaic Stadium, also known as the Kallimarmaro, is an all-marble stadium in Athens.

According to the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the cleaning project forms part of a broader effort to preserve and showcase the stadium.
The intervention is intended to enhance the appearance of the marble while contributing to the long-term preservation of one of Greece’s most prominent historic monuments.
The cleaning of the stadium’s curved end, known as the sphendone, is expected to be completed by September 10, while cleaning of the entire stadium is scheduled to be finished within 2026.

The work at the Kallimarmaro is being carried out using a gentle cleaning method. Special equipment sprays water without pressure to prevent damage to the stadium’s Pentelic marble.
Work is also underway to replace the track surface at the Panathenaic Stadium, allowing the venue to host international track and field competitions.
