Greece Tourism Dips in March Amid Middle East Conflict

Arrivals and overnight stays fell slightly year-on-year, though the broader 2026 season looks resilient as Southern Europe surges in European traveler preferences.

Greece’s tourism sector recorded a modest pullback in March 2026, with both arrivals and overnight stays declining compared to the same month last year, according to data from ELSTAT, the country’s national statistics authority.

Arrivals at tourist accommodations reached 1,181,574 in March, while overnight stays totaled 2,682,258, down 2.2% and 1.7% respectively from March 2025. The decline was seen across both foreign and domestic visitors. International arrivals fell 1.9% and overnight stays by 1.4%, while Greek residents posted steeper drops of 2.4% in arrivals and 2.0% in overnight stays.

Domestic travelers continued to account for the majority of activity, representing 57.7% of all arrivals and 54.7% of overnight stays. The average length of stay for the month stood at 2.3 nights.

The figures come against a backdrop of ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which appears to be weighing on travel patterns more broadly, though Greece’s tourism sector enters the year with considerable momentum. Both 2024 and 2025 were record-breaking years for the country, with international arrivals and travel revenues reaching historic highs.

Signals from international markets remain broadly positive. A survey by the European Travel Commission found that 82% of Europeans intend to travel within the next six months, with 65% favoring European destinations and just 9% planning trips outside the continent. Southern Europe and the Mediterranean top the list, with 59% of respondents planning to visit the region by September, a jump of 17 percentage points over 2025. Interest in Eastern Europe, by contrast, fell 6 percentage points.

A notable emerging trend is the growing appetite for quieter, less-visited destinations, with 51% of travelers now actively seeking them out. The peak summer months of May, June and July remain the most popular travel window, followed by August and September.
