Crete recorded the largest absolute increase in tourist arrivals among all Greek regional destinations in 2025, cementing its position as the country’s leading tourism destination despite global geopolitical uncertainty, according to data from the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE).
International air arrivals to Crete reached 5.6 million, a 5.5 percent increase on the previous year. Heraklion airport accounted for 14.7 percent of all international arrivals to Greece, placing it second nationally behind Athens. The airport at Chania recorded 1.6 million arrivals, further consolidating the island’s draw in international markets. Domestic air arrivals also rose by nearly 10 percent, reflecting sustained demand from Greek travelers.
Cruise Sector Surges
The island’s tourism growth extended beyond aviation, with the island also asserting itself as a dominant player in cruise tourism. The port of Souda posted a striking 43 percent increase in cruise passenger numbers, while Heraklion’s port also recorded steady gains. Officials said the rise was helping to broaden the tourist season and diversify the island’s visitor base.
2026 is also seeing the arrival of new major international hotel chains on the island, a development that points to strong investor confidence and an effort to raise the quality of the tourism offering.
Crete’s performance is seen as a key driver of Greece’s overall tourism results, with the island functioning as a cornerstone of the national economy.
