Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey is putting Messinia in the southwestern Peloponnese in the international tourism spotlight.

The film appears to be acting as a strong draw for visitors from abroad, with many tourists seeking out the locations where key scenes were shot, such as Nestor’s Cave where the Cyclops scene was filmed, as well as to Voidokilia beach and Methoni Castle.

Despite the rise in visitors, no signage marking the filming location has been put up so far.

At the same time, passenger numbers at Kalamata Airport are showing encouraging growth, with international flights up 26.2% in June alone, adding further momentum to Messinia’s standing as an international tourist destination.
