Thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to the island of Skiathos in the northwest Aegean Sea, not only to enjoy its beautiful beaches and rich history, but also to witness one of the lowest altitude landings of aircraft near a beach located just steps from the island’s airport runway.
The highly risky habit refuses to die, with online videos racking up millions of views on social media.
Incidents at the spot are countless. Every year, unusual episodes are reported as visitors gather to experience the roar of jet engines from only a few meters away.
Skiathos Airport has a short runway and a challenging location next to a hill, a lagoon, and the sea, which makes pilots perform exceptionally low landings and takeoffs, a phenomenon that has made the airport a popular spot for planespotting, often dubbed the “European St. Maarten.”
This time, a group of tourists saw their luggage lifted into the air and hurled into the sea by the powerful blast from a Ryanair aircraft preparing for takeoff.
The video of the moment has gone viral, showing people clinging to fences and railings to avoid being knocked over by the jet stream. In one striking scene, a tourist is seen running into the water to retrieve his suitcase after it was blown straight into the waves.
