Two young women were injured on Monday morning at Skiathos Island National Airport in the Aegean after standing dangerously close to a departing aircraft and being caught in the powerful jet blast of its turbine.

Skiathos Airport, known for its short runway and dramatic aircraft approaches just meters above a nearby public road and beach, has become a draw for thrill-seekers hoping to experience planes flying directly overhead. However, despite repeated warnings from local authorities and past incidents, the area continues to attract crowds who often stand within dangerous proximity to active aircraft.

According to local reports, one of the women, a young tourist from Germany, was thrown violently onto the tarmac by the force of the jet engine, sustaining serious injuries. The other woman was also affected by the blast but was reportedly less severely hurt.

Emergency Response Delayed

Following the incident, a doctor from the local health center administered first aid, but the victims later claimed that emergency medical services were slow to respond. According to the women, when they contacted the Medical Emergency Service(EKAV), they were informed that no ambulance was immediately available.

The injured German tourist was eventually transported for medical care approximately 45 minutes after the initial call, with the assistance of a local private clinic.

Eyewitnesses and friends of the victims formed a protective barrier around the woman after the incident, as a second plane took off just 10 minutes later, raising concerns about further harm.

Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to keep a safe distance, but enforcement remains a challenge given the airport’s unique layout and popularity with visitors.
