The Greek island of Skopelos — made famous as the backdrop for the Mamma Mia! films — is set to capture the attention of international air travelers for two months, after landing a four-page feature in En Voyage, the in-flight magazine of UK-based carrier Aurigny Flights, distributed aboard routes serving Britain and France.
The spread, which resulted from a press trip organized at the initiative of the Skopelos Municipal Authority, portrays the lush Northern Sporades island of the western Aegean as a destination that transcends its Hollywood associations.
“The verdant island of the Northern Sporades has in recent years captured international attention, establishing itself as a point of reference for travelers seeking authentic experiences in the Aegean,” the magazine writes. It notes that while cinema put Skopelos on the map, the island’s true appeal lies in its unspoiled natural beauty, distinctive architecture and atmosphere of tranquility.
The feature highlights Skopelo’s whitewashed stone houses with terracotta rooftops, narrow cobblestone lanes and flower-filled courtyards, alongside its rich ecclesiastical heritage — dozens of churches and monasteries dotting the landscape. The article also spotlights the island’s culinary offerings, from fresh seafood to the celebrated local cheese pie, the Skopelitiki tyropita.
The magazine concludes that the Greek island, with its measured tourism development and quality hospitality, delivers a complete travel experience — “an island that, even without the Mamma Mia soundtrack, leaves an indelible mark on every visitor.”
The President of the Skopelos Municipal Tourism Committee said the feature reflects the island’s broader outreach strategy of international visibility without compromising on quality or local identity.
