Greece has decided to extend its express visa program for Turkish citizens visiting islands in the eastern Aegean for another year, reinforcing a policy that has significantly boosted cross-border tourism. The program will now remain in place until April 2027, ensuring a steady flow of visitors from neighboring Turkey.

The decision builds on the original agreement launched in 2024 and signals continuity in the tourism ties between the two countries. The European Commission approved the extension, acknowledging both the unique nature and the success of the measure. The scheme allows select islands to maintain a privileged entry regime, substantially reducing bureaucratic hurdles for Turkish tourists.

Visitor numbers from Turkey have surged in recent years, with arrivals increasing fivefold since the program’s introduction—an indication of both strong demand and the effectiveness of simplified travel procedures.

According to the head of the Izmir Regional Board (BTK) of the Turkish Travel Agencies Association, the proximity of the Greek islands to Turkey’s coastal resorts has made them an increasingly attractive option for Turkish holidaymakers. “The Greek islands are easily accessible from Turkey’s seaside destinations and have become a compelling alternative for travelers,” he noted, adding that the express visa system has further streamlined access.

The scheme has also proven particularly beneficial for spontaneous travelers who may not have the ability to plan trips well in advance. In response to rising demand, infrastructure upgrades have been carried out at key entry points, notably the ports of Samos and Chios, enhancing their capacity to accommodate increased passenger traffic.
