Skopelos has been named a leading destination for travel experiences inspired by the hit film Mamma Mia!, according to a recent list published by Virgin Media.
In the feature, which highlights Greek destinations connected to the beloved musical, Skopelos secured the top spot, earning recognition as the quintessential Greek island behind the fictional “Kalokairi.” The island is described as “the heart of Mamma Mia!,” since it hosted the majority of the film’s outdoor shooting locations in the globally acclaimed production.
The article celebrates the island’s striking natural beauty — its lush green landscapes, pine forests stretching down to the sea, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and picturesque chapels — all of which helped shape the film’s unmistakable Mediterranean atmosphere.
Special mention is made of the iconic chapel of Agios Ioannis Chapel, perched dramatically above the sea, where the movie’s famous wedding scenes were filmed. The beaches of Kastani Beach and Glysteri Beach are also highlighted as the backdrop for some of the film’s most memorable musical moments.
This latest international recognition reinforces Skopelos’ enduring appeal and reflects ongoing efforts to preserve the island’s authenticity while strengthening its profile as a premier destination for cinematic and thematic tourism.
“Skopelos is not only the place where ‘Kalokairi’ came to life on screen, but also a destination rich in natural beauty, authentic hospitality, culture, gastronomy, outdoor activities, and exceptional beaches that offer memorable experiences beyond the peak summer season,” said George Papadavid, Tourism Councillor for the Municipality of Skopelos.
“We are committed to keeping the island’s connection with the globally beloved musical Mamma Mia! alive through original promotional initiatives, modern digital campaigns, and online collaborations with international media outlets and travel platforms. Our goal is to continuously strengthen Skopelos’ international visibility and give visitors the chance to become the stars of their own experiences on the island of Mamma Mia!”
