Dutch travel site Griekenland.net, known for its annual KALA Magazine, has released its 2025 list of the top Greek islands for outdoor holidays. This curated selection highlights six relatively quiet destinations ideal for travelers who want to combine nature, sport, and adventure—away from mass tourism.
At the top of the list is Karpathos, described as the ultimate active island. The Meltemi wind in Afiartis makes it a hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing from May to October. In the island’s mountainous north, visitors can hike scenic trails past chapels and remote villages like Olympos and Avlona. Other activities include mountain biking, climbing, kayaking, and diving around sea caves and shipwrecks.
Ikaria, one of the world’s five Blue Zones, is praised for its peaceful hiking routes through forests and traditional villages. Visitors can relax in the island’s natural hot springs after a day of activity.
Kythnos, a small Cycladic island, boasts over 100 kilometers of hiking trails. With rolling hills, windmills, and quiet bays, it’s ideal for walkers seeking an authentic island experience.
Thassos, one of Greece’s greenest islands, offers forest hikes, coastal bike routes, and kayaking opportunities. Highlights include Golden Beach and the natural rock lagoon Giola.
Kalymnos, internationally known for rock climbing, also offers diving, hiking, and a strong tradition of sponge diving.
Lefkas, connected to the mainland by bridge, combines excellent windsurfing in Vassiliki with inland hiking and waterfalls.
Each destination is accessible via ferry or flight from Athens or regional airports.
