Britain’s King Charles III has arrived in the United States for a four-day state visit aimed at reinforcing the long-standing alliance between the two countries, as tensions simmer over foreign policy and security issues.

The visit’s centerpiece will be a speech to the U.S. Congress on Tuesday, where the king is expected to stress unity and shared democratic values at a time of divisions linked to the war in Iran and broader geopolitical disagreements.

The speech comes against a backdrop of friction over the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, as well as a reported U.S. review of its stance on Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

A historic address to Congress

The address will mark only the second time a British sovereign has spoken before the U.S. Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II’s appearance in 1991.

Scheduled to last around 20 minutes, the speech will focus on the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations—often referred to as the “special relationship”—and its role in global security and prosperity. It will also include references to NATO and Ukraine, while cautioning against unilateral action.

Diplomatic engagement and symbolism

During the visit, King Charles III and Queen Camilla have already met Donald Trump and Melania Trump at the White House, where they attended a private tea and toured the grounds.

A state dinner will follow the congressional address, underscoring the ceremonial importance of the trip—the most high-profile of Charles’ reign so far.

The king is also expected to draw on his own military background, referencing his service in the Royal Navy and the close defence and intelligence ties between the two countries, even as those ties face scrutiny.

Beyond Washington, the royal couple will travel to New York to commemorate victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, before concluding their trip in Virginia with a focus on conservation—an issue long associated with the king.
