Manfred Weber, leader of the European People’s Party (EPP), has described Greece’s assumption of the Eurogroup presidency as a major achievement, following the election of Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis to the role.

Speaking after the decision, Weber emphasized the symbolic and political significance of the development, noting that Greece—once at the center of Europe’s debt crisis—now leads the forum that coordinates economic policy among eurozone countries.

According to Weber, Pierrakakis’ election reflects the confidence of his European counterparts and serves as clear evidence of Greece’s sustained reform efforts and stable economic policy. He linked this progress directly to the broader reform agenda pursued in recent years, arguing that political will and consistent reforms have delivered growth and economic credibility.

Weber also praised Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, describing him as a key figure behind the country’s recovery and renewed standing within the European Union. He said Greece’s current position demonstrates how reform-oriented governance can transform a country’s economic outlook and role in Europe.

Concluding his remarks, Weber congratulated both Greece and Pierrakakis, wishing the new Eurogroup president success in guiding the eurozone’s economic coordination during a critical period for the European economy.
