Authorities in Bulgaria are investigating a cluster of mysterious deaths in the western mountains that has left the nation baffled and fueled speculation about the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
Over the past week, six people have been found dead, including five members of a conservation-focused NGO and a 15-year-old boy, the son of a family friend. The deaths occurred at two locations: a mountain hut near Petrohan and a camper van at Okolchitsa Peak, with the hut reportedly set on fire afterward.
“This is a case without comparison in our country,” said Zahari Vaskov, director of the national police general directorate, highlighting the unusual nature of the incident. Bulgarian prosecutors have likened the double triple-death to the eerie mystery of the 1990s television series Twin Peaks.
Police have released CCTV footage showing the six individuals bidding each other farewell on February 1, the day the first deaths occurred. Investigators discovered four shell casings, two handguns, and a rifle at the scene, with forensic analysis confirming close-range gunshots.
Authorities say the deceased were involved in Tibetan Buddhism, and the hut contained related books and banners. A relative of one of the victims mentioned “exceptional psychological instability” among the group, raising further questions about their motives.
Deputy prosecutor Natalia Nikolova stated that one of the main investigative theories is that the deaths may involve murder-suicide or suicide, though clarity is still lacking. The discovery has sparked widespread speculation and conspiracy theories across Bulgaria.
