U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, citing his relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki as a key factor behind the decision.
The announcement was made in a post on Truth Social and comes just days after U.S. Vice President JD Vance said a planned troop deployment to Poland had been delayed.
The move follows a broader review of the U.S. military presence in Europe. Washington had long been expected to reduce troop numbers on the continent after Trump repeatedly called on NATO allies to assume a greater role in Europe’s defense.
“Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,” Trump wrote.
The decision underscores the close ties that have developed between Trump and Nawrocki. Trump hosted the Polish leader at the White House in May 2025 and publicly endorsed him during a closely watched election campaign.
Nawrocki went on to defeat the candidate backed by the pro-European centrist party of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The two leaders met again at the White House in September 2025. During that visit, Trump indicated that the United States could expand its military footprint in Poland and pledged continued support for the country’s defense.
The latest troop deployment announcement comes at a time when Washington’s long-term military commitments in Europe remain under scrutiny, following discussions over burden-sharing within NATO and the future shape of U.S. forces stationed across the continent.
