It happened almost overnight. One minute we were scrolling through the usual mix of selfies and stories, the next, every friend and celebrity we follow had suddenly stepped into a time machine, done up in feathered hair, thick moustaches, glitter, and loud, technicolour outfits straight out of 1985.
That’s the thing about trends today: they arrive without warning. Within days, our entire contact list had been reimagined as AI-generated disco icons of the 80s, and it became clear that everyone, famous or not, has been quietly longing to live through that decade. Some got to experience it the first time around, dancing until dawn to the era’s unmistakable soundtrack. The rest of us, it seems, are finally getting our turn, filtered through artificial intelligence rather than an actual dance floor.
Greek showbiz has thrown itself into the trend with particular enthusiasm. Doretta Papadimitriou stepped out with Giorgos Gerontidakis, Evridiki Valavani joined the wave, and Ioanna Maleskou teamed up with Katerina Zarifi for their own retro transformation, while Katerina Kainourgiou turned Anestis Evangelopoulos into a full-blown 80s heartthrob. And judging by how fast the trend is spreading, this is only the beginning.
What it all points to is a shared nostalgia, one that spans celebrities and everyday users alike, for a decade remembered as unapologetically colourful, loud, and free. Big hair, bigger music, glitter for no particular reason, and a kind of carefree fun where nobody cared what anyone else was doing.
So, back to the 80s? It certainly looks that way.
