A change in weather conditions is expected across Greece from Friday evening, with the National Meteorological Service (EMY) issuing an orange warning for locally heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible hail through the weekend.
According to the latest forecasts, the weather system will move from northwestern Greece toward much of the mainland, with eastern and southern parts of the country expected to be affected during the weekend.
The rainfall comes as Greece continues to face water-management challenges following periods of below-average precipitation. While rainfall and last season’s snowfall have helped replenish key reservoirs, water levels in several lakes and other water bodies remain under pressure, highlighting the importance of sustained precipitation for the country’s water reserves.
Three phases of the expected storm system
From Friday afternoon through late Friday night, strong weather phenomena are expected in northwest Greece, particularly Corfu, Epirus and western central Greece.
From the early hours of Saturday through midday, the system is expected to affect the remaining Ionian islands. From midday through Saturday evening, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast to move into the Peloponnese, particularly Messenia, Laconia and eastern Arcadia prefectures, as well as the island of Kythira.
On Sunday, Evia (Euboea) is expected to see heavy rain from the early morning through midday.
