Athens Sounds into Summer: The June Concerts Not to Miss

Athens welcomes summer with a packed June concert calendar, from Herodion’s final shows to major festivals and global music icons across the city.

June opens a packed summer concert season in Athens, with music lovers enjoying one final opportunity to experience performances at the iconic Herod Atticus Odeon before the historic venue closes for a long-term restoration project.

The Roman amphitheatre hosts a stellar lineup this month, including Vikingur Olafsson (June 3), Stavros Xarchakos (June 5–6), Einsturzende Neubauten (June 18), Lykke Li (June 22), and John Legend (June 30), alongside a series of tributes marking the centenary of Manos Hadjidakis.

Among the month’s classical highlights, Icelandic pianist Vikingur Olafsson makes his Athens debut with a program of Bach, Beethoven and Schubert, while the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Tonu Kaljuste, bring a celebrated evening of sacred and contemporary choral music to the Odeon on June 15. The month concludes there with Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 8, performed by the Athens State Orchestra under Michał Nesterowicz (June 29).

Rock and alternative music take centre stage at Release Athens in Water Plaza. Limp Bizkit make their long-awaited Athens debut on June 15, followed by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on June 24, Gorillaz with The Flaming Lips and Jehnny Beth on June 25, and a heavyweight metal bill featuring Megadeth and Sepultura on June 30.

This year’s SNF Nostos also welcomes two global icons: David Byrne performs at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center’s Great Lawn on June 21, while electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre follows on June 22 with one of his trademark audiovisual spectacles.

Elsewhere across the city, Technopolis hosts a diverse lineup ranging from rapper Anser (June 6) and indie-pop artist LILA (June 12) to veteran ska-reggae favourites Locomondo (June 24).

The Theatre of the Rocks welcomes milestone performances by Christos Thivaios (June 3), Yiannis Kotsiras (June 8), Miltos Paschalidis (June 12) and Vasilis Papakonstantinou (June 20), while Petra Theatre hosts Giannis Haroulis (June 15) and a three-night residency by Sokratis Malamas (June 22–24).

The atmospheric Ph Hill Sessions at Dora Stratou Theatre feature Italian songwriter Vinicio Capossela (June 9), the legendary Cheimernoi Kolymvites (June 15), and a cross-cultural Mediterranean collaboration between Polis Ensemble and Haig Yazdjian (June 23).
