The Athens Concert Hall will screen Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth live from New York’s Metropolitan Opera on Saturday, October 17, at 8 p.m., bringing one of the composer’s most dramatic operas to audiences in the Greek capital.
Performed in Italian with Greek subtitles, the opera will be screened in the Alexandra Trianti Hall as part of the Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcasts.
One of Verdi’s darkest works, Macbeth explores ambition, power and moral collapse through the story of a couple determined to seize the throne at any cost. Drawing on William Shakespeare’s tragedy, the composer weaves together political intrigue, supernatural prophecies, haunting visions and the enduring consequences of bloodshed.
The opera stands out in Verdi’s repertoire for its intense dramatic atmosphere and its direct engagement with Shakespeare, one of the most influential playwrights in world literature. Its powerful arias have also secured a lasting place in operatic history.

The Metropolitan Opera’s new production is directed by Louisa Proske, who reimagines the story through a contemporary theatrical approach and striking stage design. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the company’s music director, leads the performance.
Baritone Quinn Kelsey takes on the title role, portraying Macbeth’s rise to power and moral disintegration. He is joined by soprano Lise Davidsen as Lady Macbeth, a defining role that she will perform for the first time in her career. The cast also includes tenor Freddie De Tommaso as Macduff and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Banquo.
The live screening offers audiences in Athens the opportunity to experience Verdi’s operatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy through a direct broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
