Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama drew attention with a lighthearted remark about his attire during a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens, offering an unexpected moment of humor amid discussions on bilateral relations.
“It is an honor to be here, and I apologize for not being dressed as formally as you,” Rama said, explaining that he had not anticipated such a formal reception.
Warm exchange in Athens
The two leaders met during Rama’s visit to Greece for the Delphi Economic Forum, using the opportunity to review progress in relations between the neighboring countries.
Mitsotakis welcomed his counterpart, noting the “significant progress” achieved in bilateral ties and reaffirming Greece’s continued support for Albania’s path toward European Union membership.
He also highlighted the importance of resolving any remaining issues and strengthening what he described as a genuine friendship between the two nations.
Focus on cooperation and EU ambitions
Rama expressed appreciation for Greece’s support, emphasizing Albania’s willingness to move forward with a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement aimed at addressing all outstanding matters.
He said the goal is to deepen cooperation and enhance the region’s importance, particularly in the context of Albania’s ambition to join the European Union.
“We are very willing to continue and complete what we have agreed together,” Rama said, adding that the agreement would ensure no pending issues remain between the two countries.
Humor lightens formal setting
The Albanian prime minister’s apology over his clothing added a lighter tone to the meeting, with Mitsotakis responding in kind.
“We recognize that you are always very inventive in the way you dress, and we like that,” the Greek prime minister said.
