Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis presided over an emergency meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) on Friday to discuss the rapid escalation in the Middle East after Israel’s strike on Iran’s nuclear plants.

During the emergency government meeting, the latest dramatic developments in the Middle East were assessed. Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis provided an update on the situation and on the assistance being offered from the outset to Greek nationals currently in Israel and Iran.

Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis stated that the government is following the situation with concern, as it carries the risk of serious escalation in the region.

“The government urges all parties to show restraint and avoid any further escalation that could lead to broader destabilization,” Marinakis emphasized.

According to the government, Greece’s longstanding position is that solutions must be pursued through diplomacy.

“Greece will continue to work in this direction, together with partners and allies, in support of stability and security in the wider region,” the spokesperson concluded.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister had a phone call with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. According to the official statement, the two leaders discussed the latest regional developments, security implications, and potential consequences for regional stability.
