The political landscape in Greece is apparently heating up amid a backdrop of agriculture producers’ protests and reshuffling among many lesser opposition parties, according to the latest GPO poll published by the Parapolitika site.
Specifically, main opposition New Democracy (ND) party maintains a double-digit lead over socialist/social democrat PASOK, the main opposition party. Additionally, 82.9% of respondents expressed broad support for farm producers’ demands ahead of a Monday meeting between representatives of the latter and PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
At the same time, the poll shows significant support for any new party established by Maria Karystianou, the most prominent parent of a victim of the Tempi rail disaster. Specifically, 22.8% of respondents said they would vote for such a party founded by Karystianou. Speculation and looming developments are reshaping the balance of power on the domestic political scene, with potential losses mainly affecting leftist SYRIZA and, to a lesser extent, PASOK.
According to the poll, New Democracy leads PASOK by 12.3 points in terms of voters’ intentions – 23.5%, to 11.2%. An extrapolation of the results raises the difference to 15.2 percentage points.
In terms of an extrapolation of the results, based on valid responses, center-right ND garners 28.9%; PASOK 13.7%; 11.8% for right-wing and Eurosceptic Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution); 11.1% for left-wing and Eurosceptic Plefsi Eleftherias (Course of Freedom) party and 9.2% for the Communist Party. Once formidable SYRIZA falls to 5%, while all other parties poll below the 3%-threshold (of valid votes in a general election) needed to enter parliament.
Finally, 22.8% of respondents said consider that it’s very likely or possible that they will vote for a new party led by Karystianou, while 73.4% consider it unlikely or very unlikely.
