Greece has formally restated its objections to the 2019 maritime agreement between Turkey and Libya in a letter sent to the United Nations following its recent approval by Libya’s House of Representatives.
The letter was sent on Thursday, October 22, by Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, to Secretary-General António Guterres, acting on instructions from Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, according to diplomatic sources.
The correspondence addresses the recent decision by Libya’s House of Representatives to approve the 2019 Turkey-Libya memorandum, which Athens considers illegal.
In the letter, Greece reiterates its longstanding position that the agreement is invalid and without legal standing. It argues that the memorandum contradicts international law, particularly the law of the sea, and cannot produce legal effects for third countries.
