Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined the importance of United States participation in security guarantees for Ukraine during a leaders’ meeting in Paris, stressing that such involvement is crucial not only for Ukraine but also for Europe’s broader stability.
Mitsotakis took part in the meeting of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing,” where he reiterated the need for continued and strengthened support for Ukraine’s armed forces, describing this assistance as the most effective security guarantee for the country. He recalled that Greece has already contributed €20 million through a NATO initiative aimed at covering Ukraine’s priority defense needs.
According to government sources, Greece has ruled out participation in a European military force deployed inside Ukraine, a position the prime minister has made clear in the past. However, Athens remains open to contributing in other ways outside Ukrainian territory, including potential support in areas such as maritime surveillance. Any further involvement, the sources noted, would follow Greece’s constitutional and parliamentary procedures.
Mitsotakis also highlighted Greece’s role in supporting Ukraine’s energy security, pointing to the supply of natural gas through infrastructure in northern Greece that serves as a regional energy corridor.
He reaffirmed Greece’s firm position that borders cannot be changed by force and emphasized that decisions about Ukraine’s future must be made by Ukraine itself. At the same time, he called for closer coordination among European Union member states to ensure a unified and clear strategy in peace discussions involving the United States and Russia.
The Paris meeting concluded with French President Emmanuel Macron describing it as an important step toward a stable and lasting peace, while announcing the creation of a coordination mechanism involving European partners, the United States, and Ukraine.
