Eleven people have been arrested following a violent clash inside a prison in northern Greece that left two inmates dead, authorities confirmed on Monday.
According to police, two of those arrested — a Georgian and an Albanian inmate — are considered the main suspects behind the deadly confrontation. The remaining detainees are accused of taking part in the incident, which is now under full investigation.
Violence erupts during prison yard time
The clash took place on Sunday afternoon during outdoor time at the prison in Nigrita, in the Serres region. The violence broke out in a corridor near disciplinary cells, escalating rapidly and involving multiple prisoners.
Reports indicate that several inmates broke cell locks before launching an attack on others using sharp, makeshift weapons. The confrontation quickly turned deadly, resulting in two fatalities.
Two inmates killed
The victims were a 46-year-old Algerian inmate and a 43-year-old Iraqi inmate. One died inside the prison cell, while the second succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to hospital.
Prison staff intervened immediately, attempting to separate those involved and provide first aid, but were unable to prevent the fatal outcome.
Investigation into security breaches
Authorities have launched both criminal and disciplinary investigations into the incident. A key focus is how inmates managed to obtain sharp objects and break cell locks inside the facility.
Police say the circumstances suggest a targeted confrontation between prisoners, with more than ten individuals involved in total.
