Alarm was raised at Nigrita Prison in Serres on Sunday afternoon, April 3, after a violent altercation between inmates left two men dead inside the correctional facility.

According to initial reports, tensions began with a confrontation between a Roma inmate and an Algerian detainee. The situation quickly escalated, drawing in additional prisoners and spiraling into a broader and uncontrollable clash.

The violence culminated in a brutal attack involving improvised knives, resulting in fatal injuries to both men. Sources indicate that the victims had been held in the prison’s disciplinary wing due to their prior records. Correctional officers attempted to intervene, but the incident unfolded within minutes, leaving little opportunity to prevent the deadly attack.

Panic spread throughout the facility as authorities rushed to regain control. Reinforced police units and prison staff were immediately deployed to contain the situation and restore order.

Early reports suggest that some inmates even broke locks on secured doors during the incident, though the exact number of participants in the clash remains unclear.

The case is now under investigation by the Serres Security Sub-Directorate. Authorities are questioning both inmates and on-duty correctional staff in an effort to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the violence.

At the same time, investigators are examining how prisoners managed to break through secured areas and gain access to improvised weapons within the prison.
