Much of the country is under an orange alert for Friday, based on the risk forecast map from the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, as Greece enters the heart of summer with weather conditions that favor wildfires breaking out and spreading.
Over the past 24 hours, 35 wildland fires broke out, 30 of which were brought under control right away. The Fire Service outdid itself for another day, since most of the fires that broke out occurred under high risk conditions, but were tackled through the immediate deployment of strong ground and aerial forces.
The most significant firefighting operations took place in Agia Paraskevi, Vilia in the Municipality of Mandra-Idyllia in Attica, in Vlachopoulo in the Municipality of Pylos-Nestoras in Messinia, in Mesta on Chios, in Agios Nektarios on Kos, and in Agra, Lesvos.
Strong ground and aerial forces were deployed in these operations, with support from volunteers, water tankers, and heavy machinery from local municipalities, and in several cases the fire fronts were contained or brought under control in a short time thanks to a rapid operational response.
According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Friday carries a very high fire risk (category 4) for the following areas:
- The Region of Attica
- The Region of Crete
- The North Aegean Region (regional units of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria)
- Central Greece (regional unit of Evia)
- The Peloponnese (regional unit of Corinthia)

These regions and regional units have been placed under Red Code mobilization, aimed at fully activating the National Civil Protection Mechanism, deploying the necessary personnel and available resources, and carrying out all planned heightened readiness measures to ensure an immediate response to any incident. The Fire Service is on partial standby in the areas listed above.
