Investigators have made rapid progress in the case of an 80-year-old man found dead last Saturday in his home in Galatsi.
The man’s son discovered his body after growing worried when his father didn’t answer repeated phone calls. Entering the apartment, he found him unconscious in bed and immediately alerted authorities.
A forensic examination determined that the man was the victim of a criminal act. According to the findings, the perpetrator strangled him and then suffocated him with a pillow, ruling out any other explanation for the cause of death.
The pillow, which had bloodstains on it, has been sent to the Greek Police forensic laboratories for further testing.
Evidence gathered so far shows no signs of forced entry at the apartment’s main door, leading investigators to believe the attacker either entered without using force or already had access to the apartment. Only the victim’s bedroom was found in disarray, which supports the theory that the attacker was searching for something specific, and may have found it before fleeing.
The Attica Security Division has taken over the preliminary investigation, with officers now focused on pinpointing the exact time of death established by the coroner. That time window is considered especially important, since it will let investigators comb through security camera footage from the area to trace the attacker’s movements before and after the crime.
