As intense seismic activity in the Cyclades islands continues and thousands of residents are fleeing the islands, Haris Doukas, the Mayor of Athens has put the Municipality of Athens on high alert to provide assistance to residents leaving the islands due to fear for their safety.
Over 11,000 people, residents and visitors, have already left the island of Santorini, alone, as the earthquakes continue. The total number of recorded earthquakes in the region has already surpassed 2,500 tremors, while experts cannot say with certainty when the phenomena will come to an end.
In response to this ongoing crisis, the mayor of Athens, recognizing the emergency situation in the Cyclades, contacted the mayors of the islands. His counterparts briefed him on the developments and the immediate needs of the residents. For his part, Doukas reassured the islands’ mayors that the Municipality of Athens is ready to provide assistance if needed.
In this context, Doukas immediately opened the Agios Pavlos Friendship Club building (Mamouri 22 & Dymis) to accommodate people from the quake-stricken areas who are forced to evacuate their homes.
As reported, the Friendship Club building will remain open for as long as needed, providing a safe shelter, housing, and food to those in need.
Individuals in need can contact the the Municipality of Athens’ 24-hour helpline at 1595 for more information and guidance before heading to the club.
Additionally, due to the urgency of the situation Doukas addressed the president of Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), Lazaros Kyrizoglou, requesting an urgent meeting of the Board of Directors to discuss ways to support the Cyclades municipalities in need.
