Taxis will be available from 6 a.m. on Friday, December 5, ensuring uninterrupted transport across Athens and the wider Attica region as Storm Byron continues. The Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA) announced late on Thursday that it was suspending the 24-hour strike originally planned for Friday.
According to the union, the decision was made to safeguard public mobility amid severe weather expected to hit Attica in the coming hours. “Our main concern is the unhindered movement of citizens,” SATA said, noting that the suspension is temporary and remains in effect until further notice.
Storm Byron hit Athens on Thursday evening causing flooding, road closures, and power cuts, and prompting school closures in Attica on Friday, December 5.
The union went on to add that the pause should not be interpreted as backing down from its demands. “This decision does not constitute a renunciation of our struggle. On the contrary, we warn the government and the Transport Ministry that resolving the serious problems of the sector remains imperative and necessary,” the statement said.
SATA will issue further updates regarding the continuation of its protest actions in the coming days.
Attica taxi drivers began their strike on Tuesday, December 2, staging demonstrations in central Athens. Their initial plans included extending the walkout into Friday.
