Greek authorities are continuing to investigate the discovery of a man’s body in an advanced state of decomposition inside an apartment in the Pangrati district of central Athens.

The body was found on Sunday evening in an apartment on Astydamantos Street, where the victim lived with his brother.

The case came to light after authorities received reports of a strong odor coming from the apartment. Officers entered the property and found the man’s body wrapped in bed sheets. According to local residents, the two brothers suffered from psychological problems and frequently argued.

Brother hospitalized after being found in poor condition

The victim’s 63-year-old brother was found in a neighboring room in poor physical condition. He was initially taken in for questioning before being transported to hospital by ambulance for medical treatment.

According to public broadcaster ERT, the two brothers were both former police officers and had lived together in the first-floor apartment for several years.

Authorities await forensic examination

While the evidence gathered so far points primarily to the possibility of a sudden or natural death, investigators have not ruled out criminal involvement.

The exact cause of death is expected to be determined through a forensic examination.
