A 13-year-old girl is fighting for her life in intensive care after falling from the first floor of a secondary school in Haidari, a suburb in western Athens. She has been hospitalized for a third consecutive day in critical but stable condition at the Children’s Hospital “Agia Sophia”, where doctors continue to monitor her closely.
Medical staff describe the case as extremely severe, following a prolonged emergency operation that lasted more than four hours and pushed the medical team to their limits.
Extraordinary struggle in the operating room
According to the head of the neurosurgery department, the child was in cardiac arrest for around 50 minutes during treatment. Anesthesiologists and cardiologists repeatedly performed resuscitation efforts, while surgeons had to pause and resume the operation multiple times.
A representative of Greece’s public hospital workers’ union said the situation involved four separate cardiac arrests during a single hour of surgery, with doctors alternating between resuscitation and surgical intervention. Despite the severity, the child survived, something doctors describe as highly unusual.

Early medical findings offer cautious hope
Initial CT scans have not shown irreversible brain damage, a finding doctors consider particularly significant given the severity of her injuries. She remains under deep sedation in intensive care as medical teams continue treatment and observation.
Witness accounts under scrutiny
Authorities are also investigating the circumstances of the fall, which occurred from a height of approximately four meters. Testimonies from classmates differ, and the exact sequence of events remains unclear.
One student who was present said the girl briefly stepped onto a railing, released her hands, and fell head-first. Investigators are treating all accounts with caution as they work to reconstruct what happened.
School response and ongoing investigation
The school administration has stated that there was no structural defect or evidence of someone pushing the student at the time of the incident. At the same time, psychologists have been deployed to support students who witnessed the fall.
Police are continuing their investigation, taking statements and examining all possible scenarios, including whether the incident was a tragic accident or if other factors played a role.
Images from the site have also raised questions about maintenance conditions of the railing area, a factor that authorities are now reviewing as part of their inquiry.
