Greece’s recent stretch of sunny, summer weather is expected to take a temporary turn starting Friday, with a noticeable drop in temperatures and scattered storms forecast for much of the country.
According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), strong northerly “meltemi” winds will intensify on Friday, pushing temperatures down by as much as three degrees Celsius in several regions.
Meteorologist Thanasis Kolydas said a low-pressure system currently positioned over Italy is moving eastward and is expected to bring unstable weather to Greece on Friday and Saturday. Localized showers and scattered storms are expected, particularly in mainland regions.
A second low-pressure system from the Black Sea is predicted to move into the country on Monday, extending the unsettled weather into early next week.
More specifically, on Friday, mostly clear skies initially, but clouds and local showers are expected in the mainland after midday. Northern Greece may experience isolated thunderstorms. Visibility in the west will be limited in morning hours. Winds will blow west-northwest at 3-5 Beaufort, reaching up to 6 Beaufort in the eastern Aegean.
On Saturday, rain and cloudy skies are forecast for Central Macedonia, Thessaly, the Sporades, and Evia, easing by afternoon. Clear to partly cloudy elsewhere, with showers and sporadic storms in Central Greece and the Peloponnese. Winds from the north will range from 3-7 Beaufort. A slight temperature drop is forecast.
On Sunday, temporary cloudiness expected over mainland areas during afternoon hours, with showers in the mountainous regions. Winds will be variable in the west (3-4 Beaufort) and northerly in the east (4-6 Beaufort), reaching up to 7-8 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea. Temperatures will continue to drop slightly in eastern parts of the country.
The Greek weather service forecasts a gradual return to warmer, more seasonable conditions as temperatures begin to climb once again by mid-week.
