Crete: Hope for 3yo in ICU as Condition Improves

The three-year-old girl at the center of an abuse case that shocked Greece has been removed from life support and is expected to leave intensive care, as investigators continue examining the circumstances behind her severe injuries

There is encouraging news regarding the three-year-old girl from Chania, Crete, who remains hospitalized at the University General Hospital of Heraklion after suffering serious injuries that prompted intervention by the authorities and the launch of a judicial investigation.

According to reports, the child’s condition continues to show steady improvement, leading doctors to prepare for her transfer from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to a regular hospital ward.

The girl has already been taken off mechanical ventilation, and her treating physicians believe her recovery is progressing positively.

Following her discharge from intensive care, the three-year-old will continue receiving treatment at the Pediatric Surgery Clinic of the University General Hospital of Heraklion, where she will remain under close medical supervision until her recovery is complete and doctors determine that it is safe for her to leave the hospital.

The case shocked Crete and the entire country after the child was admitted to hospital with a severe hematoma to the head and injuries to various parts of her body. The medical findings prompted an investigation by the relevant authorities into the circumstances under which the injuries were sustained.

The girl’s 25-year-old mother and her 27-year-old partner have been remanded in custody in connection with the case and face charges of attempted homicide. Following their testimony before the investigating magistrate in Chania, they were ordered to remain in pre-trial detention pending the completion of judicial proceedings.

For their part, both defendants deny the allegations and maintain that the child’s injuries were the result of an accident. At the same time, the investigation remains ongoing, with the results of forensic examinations considered crucial to clarifying the circumstances of the case.

Most importantly, however, the young girl is now successfully fighting her way back to health, and the progress of her recovery is bringing hope and relief after the difficult days that preceded it.
