A 25-year-old mother of the three-year-old girl currently fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) was remanded in custody on Tuesday under Greece’s fast-track procedure on misdemeanor charges.
As the three-year-old girl remains intubated in critical condition, both the mother and her partner, of Pakistani origin, are due to appear before the investigating magistrate on Wednesday for charges of attempted homicide.
The 25-year-old woman has already been sent to prison after receiving a three-year sentence without the right to appeal for the false statements she gave first to police and later to the prosecutor. When the child was rushed to hospital suffering seizures last Thursday, the mother initially claimed the injuries occurred after the girl fell at a playground.
She later changed her statement, saying the incident happened while she was doing housework at home.

Mystery Surrounding the Children
New details have also emerged regarding the three other children found in the woman’s care. One of the three other children, a 10-month-old baby, currently being temporarily housed at Chania Hospital, reportedly belongs to the woman’s sister and was fathered with the same man now accused in the case.
At the same time, serious questions remain over the fate of two other children connected to the woman. No death certificates have been found, raising concerns about what may have happened to them.
If the children are alive, one would now be nine years old, while the other would be two years old, born in 2024. Authorities say there are no birth certificates for either child.
Partner’s Criminal Record Under Scrutiny
The woman’s partner is also due to testify, while investigators continue examining what officials describe as an extensive criminal history.
According to reports, he has previously faced accusations including rape, theft, domestic violence, repeated weapons law violations, and child abduction.
On social media, the man reportedly maintained profiles showcasing a lavish lifestyle, posing beside swimming pools while displaying luxury brands, gold watches, and large amounts of cash.
Authorities are also searching for the suspect’s brother, who has not yet been located. Investigators are examining what relationship he may have had with the 25-year-old woman and whether he could have any involvement in the case.
‘We Found Clear Signs of Abuse’
The governor of Chania General Hospital, spoke to Greek broadcaster MEGA about the child’s condition and the situation involving the woman’s other children.
“As is known, last Thursday evening the unfortunate three-year-old girl was brought to Chania General Hospital by her mother suffering seizures,” he said.
“Because her condition did not improve, all examinations were carried out, especially imaging tests, which revealed a subdural hematoma. This led our neurosurgeon, pediatric surgeon and pediatricians to agree that she urgently required intubation and transfer to the Pediatric ICU at PAGNI.”
“At the same time, she had bruises and marks all over her body. These were obvious signs of abuse. Where they came from is now the subject of an ongoing police and judicial investigation. We identified clear signs of abuse, which is why we immediately contacted the Juvenile Protection Unit, which arrived at the hospital right away. They remained in constant communication with the prosecutor, and the temporary detention of the little girl’s mother was ordered that same night. The woman has three other children,” he added.
“They Have Never Said the Word Mom or Dad”
Speaking about the other children, Beas described a deeply troubling situation.
“On Friday afternoon I received a distressing phone call from the pediatric emergency department. Adult police officers, together with the ambulance service and the Smile of the Child organization, had brought in three children — one estimated to be six to eight months old, one around six years old, and one eight years old.”
“We activated the emergency management protocol immediately. I contacted the head of social services, nursing management, and Smile of the Child. By the time I arrived at the hospital myself, the entire senior medical team on duty was already there.”
He explained that the children underwent surgical, orthopedic, imaging, and laboratory examinations before being admitted to the pediatric ward.
“We created a room for them that resembles a playground. What struck me on a human level is that these children have never uttered the words ‘mom’ or ‘dad.’ Not once. They have not shed a tear or shown sadness — not even the baby. Of course, now they are receiving warmth, care and affection. Smile of the Child is doing incredible work.”
Beas continued: “Visually, the children were in very poor condition. They were dirty. Their clothes were covered in mud. We washed them, brought them clean clothes, and there has been an outpouring of support from volunteers. Many citizens are bringing toys and clothing, while the municipality’s social services also delivered supplies yesterday.”
“When I walk into the room, one child pulls at my trousers to show me a remote-control car, another wants to play bowling with balls. Then one of them opens the refrigerator just to show me that it’s full of food and baby creams.”
“Two Children Are Missing”
Former police officer Giorgos Kalliakmanis said hospital social security records indicate the woman gave birth to five children, while her sister — who occasionally lived with her — gave birth to another child.
“That means we are talking about six children in total,” he said.
“No one even knows who the fathers of the children are. Police have rightly requested DNA tests so we can finally determine the children’s parentage. But the most important thing is that two children are missing. There are no certificates, no records, nothing.”
