A temporary migrant reception facility is moving forward with the backing of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, to be set up at the former Skouloudi warehouses located at the 10th kilometer of the Heraklion national highway.
According to reports, Migration Minister Thanos Plevris has already informed both the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, and the Mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokerinos, of the plan. Ministry teams have conducted an on-site inspection of the property and are in talks with its owner to begin the necessary technical work and complete the required procedures for the facility to become operational.
The Ministry of Migration and Asylum says the new facility is expected to be ready for use in approximately 20 days, with the goal of opening before the end of July.
The site will operate as a closed temporary shelter, modeled on the exhibition facility in Agia, Chania, in order to address the growing pressure from migrant arrivals on Crete. The ministry has offered assurances that the local community will not face any additional burden, saying the facility will be managed in a way that ensures harmonious coexistence and social stability in the area.
