An electronic platform, “e-Peitharxika,” developed by Greece’s National Transparency Authority this week completed two years of operation, with the digital tool aimed to tackle abuse of power, bribery and breaches of duty continue in the country’s public administration.

At the same time, questions persist in terms of public discourse, namely, how long disciplinary proceedings against allegedly corrupt public officials last and whether the progress and outcomes of such proceedings can be effectively monitored.

The online system (peitharxika being the plural in Greek for “disciplinary boards”) provides the independent authority with real-time monitoring of disciplinary cases, enabling timely intervention when necessary and reinforcing transparency, public accountability and trust in state institutions.

The platform was designed by the authority programmers in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, and implemented entirely in-house. Its innovation was recognized in 2023, when it received second prize at the “Digital Governance Awards,” organized by the Ministry of Digital Governance, in the category of “Best Applied Idea.”

Through “e-Peitharxika,” authorities systematically track the progress of preliminary investigations, sworn administrative inquiries, disciplinary proceedings before both single-member and collective bodies, as well as related criminal cases. The system also follows cases beyond the issuance of disciplinary decisions, including instances where legal appeals are filed.

Officials say the platform marks a significant step toward improving institutional transparency for Greece’s often cavernous public sector and ensuring more effective handling of disciplinary procedures within the public sector.
