A 47-year-old woman has been arrested in northern Greece after police found a dog being transported in a plastic cage placed in the bed of a pickup truck, in a violation of the country’s animal welfare legislation.

According to Greek police, the woman was stopped in the early hours of the morning following a report to authorities. Officers found the dog confined inside the cage, with police stating that the transport conditions significantly restricted the animal’s ability to move.

The woman was taken into custody and appeared before prosecutors under Greece’s fast-track legal procedure for certain criminal cases.

In addition to the arrest, authorities imposed administrative fines totaling €6,300. According to police, the penalties relate to the absence of the dog’s electronic identification microchip, the lack of a health record booklet, and the restriction of the animal’s freedom of movement during transport.
